Further improvements that will benefit customers of Allen Gears Services, including quicker response, greater flexibility and even sharper accuracy, are being delivered now that a powerful new 'arm' is starting to flex its muscles.
Services' new Faro arm - a portable precision co-ordinate measuring machine with a 1.8 metre radius of reach - is busy working on a range of gearbox projects, accurately checking key elements such as bore alignment and external and internal component dimensions.
"Our engineers can take this machine worldwide and use it to enhance the speed and accuracy with which we can undertake complex re-engineering projects,"' explains Richard Stapleton.
"It also brings us significant benefits in-house. Previously, for example, the best way for us for to measure a major component sometimes meant placing it on a large boring machine, which can be time-consuming and expensive. Now we use the Faro arm here in the Services workshop and get precise measurement results much more quickly and efficiently."
And in the past, certain particularly large elements of reverse engineering projects occasionally proved too big even to measure in-house, requiring specialist work by sub-contractors. Now, however, the Faro arm can embrace even the largest gearbox component, providing faster response times in the often time-critical Services marketplace.
