Not all Allen Gears Services' expertise focuses on other manufacturer's products, as thousands of Pershore-built gearboxes are still in continuous service around the world - and some have logged enormous totals of running-hours.
For example in Assam, Northern India, Allen Gears Allison 501 Generator Mounted epicyclic units installed in Captive Power Plants back in the 1970s have achieved significantly more than 100,000 hours. Inevitably, wear is beginning to show.
These Captive Power Plants provide all of the critical power for Group Gathering Stations for the RDS, LAKWA and GELEKI Oilfields, operated by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) India. Without the Power Plants, the oil can not be processed. The gas turbine driven generators provide the sole power for the plants, and therefore it is critical that the complete machinery train, including the Allen gearbox, remains in prime condition.
Allen Gears Services personnel are now undertaking full inspection and overhaul of the gearboxes. New parts are being manufactured in Pershore and shipped to India for installation in the six units. Each unit will be overhauled in just 5 working days.
"The operator can now confidently expect several more decades of reliable service from these gearboxes," predicts Francis Moss of Allen Gears Services.
