Allen Gears Services' efforts to strengthen its role in the global aftermarket for gearbox repair, maintenance and overhaul have intensified with an in-depth examination of markets in the Far East and Australia by aftermarket specialist Kevin Sierwald.
Kevin has just returned from an intensive six-week programme of meetings with major gearbox operators in Thailand, Sabah, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, getting an update on the quantities and locations of Allen Gears units (some of which have been running since the 1960s) and investigating the potential for new Services business, both on Allen Gears' and other manufacturers' products.
His study follows a recent similar exercise covering India and Sarawak, Malaysia, which has led to significant new aftermarket business.
"This exercise around the Far East has already triggered a large number of enquiries," adds Kevin, "particularly for inspection work, which in the past has frequently led to closer involvement with customers and to additional business.
"Certainly during the past two years we have seen Services' business levels in India and Sarawak, Malaysia increase significantly with better customer service and better personal relationships developing as a result of our getting out there and talking directly with gearbox users and operators. It shows the strength of face-to-face contact.
"From now on our capabilities in the Far East and Australia will increase, too, with additional enquiries set to lead to additional business throughout the region. Operators are discovering that as well as specialising in original equipment Allen Gears has highly effective expertise in aftermarket services, regardless of the original manufacturer of their gearboxes."
