Allen Gears Services now has two dedicated experts ready to travel worldwide to focus on two tell-tale signs of potential gearbox problems - noise and vibration.
These early warnings of unseen ageing and wear within a gearbox can now be monitored, analysed and interpreted highly effectively by the expertise and high-tech tools of Ian Foxley and Scott Morgan, Allen Gears new team of noise and vibration specialists.
"This sort of preventative maintenance is a good first stage in carrying out a maintenance programme, and it can save operators considerable downtime and expense," reports Francis Moss of Allen Gears Services.
"The cost of plant downtime required for a non-scheduled repair to a gearbox can be enormous. In the past we used the expertise of our Service fitters to gauge the level of importance and significance of noise and vibration and this proved effective, but it relied on the availability of a Service fitter.
"Now we have a dedicated resource of noise and vibration expertise. Ian and Scott can compare regular readings from condition monitoring equipment, using vibration probes to provide highly accurate information. The preventative maintenance schemes their inputs allow us to develop will help customers to continue operating with greater predictably, less risk and optimum confidence."
