Allen Gears has a long history of supplying epicyclic gearboxes for steam turbine driven generator sets, through its former sister company Allen Steam Turbines.

To date, we have installed over 500 units, with power ratings up to 43 MW, and ratios up to 9:1. This includes over 370 epicyclic units with unrivalled advantages, including: higher mechanical efficiency, lower noise and greater compactness when compared to the alternative parallel shaft solution.

Due to the recent pressure to develop green solutions for energy production, there has been a growth in the demand for steam turbine applications, for both Combined Heat and Power plants, and also Biomass power production. In these segments, where efficiency is of utmost importance, epicyclic gearboxes offer huge advantages.

In addition, if a generator mounted epicyclic solution is employed, (used by many steam turbine customers) then the advantages of increased efficiency, and reduced skid size are even greater.

Allen Gears will always partner with the turbine OEM or packager to develop the optimum solution based upon the application and end site requirements. As an option, we can develop a ‘standard range’ of gearcases, to which various internals can be employed, reducing both leadtime and price, and increasing standardization in the customers package.
