HYDRO TURBINE GENERATOR DRIVES
As a world-class supplier into the power generation industry, we have a particular skill to apply this sophisticated technology to hydro turbine projects.
An epicyclic geared system offers the ability to drive a lower cost, high speed generator with a low speed turbine. Low head turbines running at 40 – 200rpm with a power output of 1-30 MW can be geared to high speed generators resulting in higher overall efficiency, compared to the directly driven generator alternative.
Power plant designers face unique river characteristics for each location. Bespoke geared systems enable the designer to achieve the best output for the lowest capital cost.
The first Allen Gears hydro gearbox was installed in 1979 for Kværner Boving at the Perak Hydro Power Plant in Malaysia. Since then, we have accumulated over 3 million hours of operation with this and other installations giving Allen Gears a wealth of knowledge that underpins its first class technology to ensure the success of every project. Significant applications include the worlds largest geared hydro power plant – Murray Lock and Dam – a 23 MW hydro power plant, for which our gearbox won the Queens design award in 1988.
With an excellent reliability record, and units designed for ease of preventative maintenance, end users can be assured of a long term, reliable income resulting from the inclusion of an Allen unit in their plant.
